Hosting KEEPERS campers – summer 2012

July 12, 2012 Andrew 8 Comments

Today Oskar Palinko and I hosted 21 KEEPERS campers in our driving simulator lab. KEEPERS works with kids in grades 2-5. Kids this age have so much enthusiasm – it’s fun to talk to them. Next week we get to do it again!

Got to correct someone's pronunciation of "pedantic" today. Quite enjoyable, would recommend. Retweeted by Andrew Kun

@martinabel_econ @raffasadun I’m curious if there’s a similar effect in how students perceive negative feedback from male and female professors. I also wonder if exposure to female professors while in college later affects how people interact with female managers.

I love the line ruling on the tablet, which is there to guide the writing. We still have this in our paper notebooks. It’s fascinating to see some technologies/solutions persist over millennia. twitter.com/britishmuseum/…

✏📚 It’s #BackToSchool for many in London today! This schoolwork was completed over 3,700 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia.

A teacher has written a few lines of cuneiform text – perhaps a proverb – for a student to copy on the other side of the tablet https://t.co/0aJmJfTHpE pic.twitter.com/s43MTjmtN6

It is almost always true that in scientific papers you should work hard to cut words. (When I read my first drafts there are always extra words to cut.) But it’s also true that in some cases clarity requires extra words. Good resource: Sense of Style by @sapinker. twitter.com/shl/status/116…

If you can say the same thing in fewer words, do that.

Being fearless is not necessarily rational - after all plenty of startups fail! But being fearless might make the startup less likely to fail, because the exec is not distracted by worrying about the (quite likely) failure.

This caught my attention b/c I just finished The Goodness Paradox by Richard Wrangham. He argues that self-confidence in battle against a roughly-equal opponent is an evolutionary adaptation. “By giving focus and promoting a successful bluff positive illusions help people win.” twitter.com/saranormous/st…

Two hugely undervalued attributes of startup execs - a problem-solving attitude and a lack of fear. 1/

Amazing work by @urbanwildstudio - they created visual representations of the discussion at our @MSFTResearch workshop. I plan to display their work in my office soon, and I’m already using it as conversation starters to discuss research. Thanks @urbanwildstudio! twitter.com/urbanwildstudi…

Got to capture a fascinating discussion on the now and future of mobile work at @MSFTResearch #MSFTFacSumm yesterday! Thank you for having us. 💫 https://t.co/FNdktkGsdq
